Accentuate the Positive!

Accentuate the Positive!

There was a song that came out in WWII that was composed to help the people lift their spirits and encourage them to persevere during difficult times. It began like this: “You’ve got to accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative, latch on to the affirmative, don’t mess with Mr. in-between!”

Times were tough and uncertain then, with folks having to make all kinds of sacrifices to make everyday life bearable. We too live in difficult times.

The apostle Paul describes these times when he writes these words to Timothy in Timothy 2 vs 1-5. “But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. Avoid such people.”

Today let us keep our hearts and minds turned to the good. Philippians 4: 8-9 helps us direct our thinking in these times: “ Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard from me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”

Accentuate the Positive! Our goal is abundant life here and a life with God hereafter.
